This is a 45min short film and it was incredible to watch. I remember that last time I first watched this short film was two months ago whilst we were holidaying in Filey and half way through it my mum went out to get Fish and Chips for tea and she missed most of this short film. The story centres on a 15-year-old boy Takao Akizuki who meets a mysterious woman called Yukari Yukino one rainy day in the park. Takao always skips school during rainy the weather due to health reasons. Takao is also learning to become a shoemaker, another reason why he goes to the park. But once he meets Yukari he feels like he’s already met her before. Takao mainly lives with his mother and his older brother but his brother is moving out. There are really close brothers. On sunny mornings he attends school as normal. Another rainy weather occurred and he meets his mysterious woman again. This mysterious woman likes to drink a lot; which is why she’s at the park most mornings, she really needs to eat something. They will meet again and again on rainy days. Sometimes they just sit and sometimes they talk to each other. From the time when he goes to sleep and from the time when he goes to sleep he prays for rain to come so that he can meet his mysterious woman. Takao really needs to know more about Yukari because she looks younger than she is. The sunny days came one after another for ten days and they can’t meet again. It’s totally different on sunny days and Takao no longer has an excuse not to attend school. And then the summer holidays came and Takao spends most of his days working part-time as a waiter in order to save money to buy material and equipment for making shoes. When school began in September and finally Takao realized that Yukari Yukino is a 27-year-old teacher working at the and high school that Takao attends. The next time Takao went to the park he went during a clear day just to meet Yukari after finding out who she really was, a 27 year old teacher. But somehow Takao doesn’t seem to care about how old Yukari really is when they’re spending a lot of time together. He really does love her. Yukari tried to convince herself not to fall in love with a 15 year old. But she couldn’t help it. She ran after him to tell him how she feels. Takao gave her a piece of his mind by saying that he hates her, telling her she’s poison because she drinks beer in the mornings and sayings random Tanka’s at him, listening to other people talking all day, never revealing herself, knowing who Takao really is, thinking Takao would never amount to anything, calling her a loser, never say what’s important, pretended it’s her business and living alone. But she admitted that every morning she gets dressed, goes to school, being scared. But once Takao came, she just couldn’t let go in there. Takao saved her.
According to Makoto Shinkai (the director of Your Name and The Garden Of Words) this film is mainly about the age between two different characters and their trait demonstrate how awkwardly and disjointedly people matured, where even adults sometimes feel no more mature than teenagers. But I think that this short film teaches us that we should be their for our friends and families and help them pull out from their problems by being there for them.
