Before I start reviewing I am feeling beyond excitement because...wait for it...NANCY NETTLETON & RAYMOND DE GUISE ARE GETTING MARRIED!!! YAY!!!I don't have to guess where the wedding reception will be taking place as it'll take place at the Buckingham Hotel, the place where their love story began. I do have loads of questions such as the flowers, the music and more importantly the dress Nancy will be wearing.
Prologue
At the start of the book Mrs Emmeline Moffatt received an unexpected guest at the hotel. And this guest is going to have a baby. Who is this mysterious guest? Who is the baby's father? Since the first book Mrs. Moffatt has been a mother to her chambermaids. I mean she is Head of Housekeeping. And if any of the chambermaids are having problems they can always talk to Mrs. Moffatt. I mean my boss at the British Heart Foundation is like a second mother to and since two of her children are on the spectrum themselves (one with Aspergers Syndrome and one with Autism like me) I am not afraid to talk to her about any problems I have.
Chapter 1
Tobias Bauer, an Austrian was a regular visitor to our shores. But this time he's stranded as he's afraid that Hitler has sights on his homeland. Tobias Bauer is just simply a decent man who enjoys and respects the freedoms of the world. He had rage, terror and helplessness in his face. Tobias's brother who had already warned him not to return to Austria. War was definitely on the horizon. The hotel manager Maynard Charles has already known about it for a long months. He tried pretending their was hope. But he was glad that his friend came to him in his hour of need. The people and Lloyds told him told him him that the funds are no longer at his disposal. Meaning he's having a problem with paying for his suit. But Maynard Charles has an idea. he decided to give Tobias the Park suite. whilst Billy showed Tobias the Park suite he poured himself a stiff brandy to savor his reward for helping a man in his hour of need. But he would have to do it a thousand times through the months and years at the Buckingham Hotel. On his desk laid an open copy of the Daily Mail among other newspapers delivered daily to the tradesman door. It read:
"German Jews pouring into this country."
""The way stateless Jews and Germans are pouring in from every part of this country is becoming an outrage. I intend to enforce the law to is fullest!" In these words, Mr. Herbent Metcalfe, the old street magistrate, yesterday referred to the number of aliens entering this country through the 'back door' a problem to which the Daily Mail has reportedly pointed..." Later Mr. Charles went down to the Grand Ballroom and saw carpenters, joiners and other tradesmen finishing up the features for reopening night. They have worked day and night to refit and repair the ballroom with thanks to the American member of the board John Hastings. Maynard felt sure that the Grand would recapture its reputation it had once before as a jewel in London's crown. Maynard wants to avoid everything from the loyalties of lords and ladies and the hotels fortunes at all cost, including the impending war. Raymond and Helene danced as Maynard watched them as well as Nancy's brother Frank Nettleton. Raymond and Helene are preparing themselves for the grand reopening. Helene is positive that the Hotel will be back on top. I can tell that Helene might be right because for a few fleeting hours the world outside of the hotel won't exist at all. And what Helene said made Maynard believe.
Chapter 2
Raymond arrived at White Chapel and met up with his brother Artie. You can guess why Nancy will be surprised to see Raymond as Artie and Vivienne are in on Raymond's plan. As a matter of fact I think everyone at the Daughters Of Salvation knew Raymond's plan. Once Nancy looked at him he had a look that no one nor other guest dancing with him in the Buckingham ballroom ever saw. That night was a special night of their lives. And you can guess why. And it took place at Old Oak.
Chapter 3
There's death in the air. And it's to do with Lord Marchmont. Lord & Lady Marchmont mus cherish and treasure the days they have left. His sister Lucy wrote a letter which was posted to the Buckingham Hotel and was delivered to Mrs. Moffatt by Nancy's brother Frank. All the dancers had one thing in common: you had to let the music live in you. Frank arrived at the hotel's grand ballroom with a letter for Helene. That night Helene Marchmont waited at Ambergris Under Charring Cross Station. She needed help from Louis Kildare. She handed the letter to Louis and he read it:
"Dear Helene
Perhaps you will not welcome this letter, but I fear I must take that risk and sent it regardless. Helene, your father lies dying. His doctor instructs us that the remainder of his life is to be counted in months, not years. How long precisely, he will not say. Your father is an ox and had defied his naysayers throughout his life. But no christian soul defies his Lord and God for long. He is soon to embark on his final adventure. He is too stubborn to reach for you himself, so I am reaching for you with this letter. Let him not go to his end under the shadow of what he has lost. Let him not breathe his last breath without laying eyes on his only daughter once more. The past is the past. But your father is not to have a future.
Come home, Helene.
Your loving aunt, always,
Lucy."
Louise said "Life always is an off-note, once in a while." Will Helene go to her father on his deathbed?
Chapter 4
Dancers nervously getting themselves ready and the applause reverberated as Archie Adams and his orchestra took to the stage. Once Raymond, Helene and the other dancers were ready the doors open. For a moment the world outside the Grand would not exist. It seemed that when the music reached its climax the whole dance floor was for Helene and Raymond. Vivienne's father Lord Edgerton took notice of how much his stepdaughter had changed since he last saw her. And he wanted to know why. I should know that she has changed so much because I read the first two books in this series 'One Enchanted Evening' & 'Moonlight Over Mayfair.'
There was a moment when Maynard Charles was forced back into reality when Frank Nettleton informed him that he has a visitor. His visitor was none other than Mr. Moorcock. morrcock know about Maynard's private life and blackmailed him into spying on his hotel guests. Moorcock has asked Maynard Charles's assistance once again.
Chapter 5
Nancy has told Rose and Ruth about her engagement to Raymond. She has already asked her brother Frank to walk her down the aisle. But if he's unable to who will give Nancy away? Nancy has asked Ruth and Rose to be her bridesmaids. But in truth was they weren't the first to be asked. Nancy has already asked Vivienne to be a bridesmaid after telling her the good news two days ago. As a matter of fact the wedding was all they can talk about. Billy Brogan asked Ruth to step-out and go dancing with him. He really does have a fancy for Ruth. But Ruth dismissed him. Why would she dismiss a handsome and charming man like Billy Brogan?
Chapter 6
Helene's daughter Sybil, now three years old, is steady on her feet. But tumbles over when she gets excited. She still has her mother's smile and her father's eyes. Sybil's father's family were so kind to Helene when she had Sybil and the rest is history. It's good for a mother to spend time with her daughter. And I should know that because every year during summer me, my mum and my big sister Charlotte go on a annual mother-daughters day out. When Noelle joined Helene and her granddaughter Helene thought it was time to tell Noelle about the letter she received. When Noelle asked Helene what does she want to do Helene thought that to go back would be a betrayal. This was the first time Helene spoke with passion. As soon as Maurice entered he sat down and read the letter that Helene had brought with her. Maurice said to Helene that going to see her family is for her heart alone. In the midst of the conversation Helene made a decision. I hope she made the right decision and knows what she's doing.
Chapter 7
Whilst they were at the Odeon watching watching "Robin Hood" starring Erroll Flynn both Nancy and Raymond dreamt of their wedding and family life. When Nancy thought about becoming Mrs. de Guise she thought if the world would accept a married working woman. Nancy is pretty sure that she's ready for a life with Raymond. At the moment the Buckingham Hotel was the only home they both knew. As long as they're together they'll work things out. As Nancy woke the following morning the chambermaids in the kitchenette talked of nothing but the wedding. News of Nancy and Raymond's upcoming wedding reached Mrs. Moffatt. She can tell that Nancy is feeling nervous. Not about the wedding but what happens after the wedding celebrations. I mean Raymond wil still be dancing at the Buckingham Hotel Grand Ballroom and Nancy thought working a the hotel and the daughters of salvation would have to end for her. Mrs. Moffatt told Nancy her life story: working at a young age, married at a slightly older age than Nancy was, her husband went off to war, was killed during the war and she kept on working, going and striving. This has helped clear Nancy's mind. As soon as Nancy left Mrs. Moffatt felt sentimental as she remembered her husband. She looked at a letter that was written by her son Macolm:
"One day I should like to sit with you and drink English tea, and speak of what it was like, on the beaches at Mandurah where I grew up. I would tell you about my summers there, there and the wide open sounds, or the first job I took on a convoy heading north, or the day my stepbrothers and I took off for the recruiting office and became Australia's newest infantry men. I should like to tell you about Shep, my boyhood dog, who waited for me everyday, all day long at the bottom of the lane that wound its way down to my school. I should like to tell you about Rachel, my first love. I should tell you about the day I went off to Paint Cock, to train with the Royal Australian Air Force. And I should like to tell you about Neville and Charlotte, my ma and pa, who raised me with the courage. Neville and Charlotte, who looked after me. I swear to you as if I was their own. One day I should like to hear about your life too, Emmeline. These are questions I should like to ask, yes and perhaps there are stories you'd like to tell me too. but most of all, I only want to look at you in the eyes and know you for who you are. I am going to leave this letter now, in the way that I have longed dreamt of leaving it with these three simple words, which are the sun of a lifetime.
Your son,
Malcolm."
Chapter 8
Spring was certainly in the air. Billy, Nancy, Rose and Ruth went out dancing at the Starlight Lounge. I bet they just gone out dancing so that Billy can spend some time with Ruth and Rose convincing Ruth that she needs a man in her life and help her enjoy something for once in her life. When Nancy thought about dancing with someone else she thinks about Raymond. And when she got the chance to wear her engagement ring like at the Starlight Lounge, it foretold about her future life. Ruth is playing hard to get. If she's not going to dance with Billy she might try and talk to him. I think that the evening might not be as bad for Billy. Ruth told Billy about her family: dad dies in the war, never got the chance to meet him and was looked after by her mum and nan. However for Nancy to go out into the world and not sitting and watching it go by is for her to decide. Nancy noticed what Billy was doing and told him off for it. Later Ruth was joined by a petite, dark haired girl with striking blue eyes called Martha. And she is just like Ruth, not for dancing. Dancing is about letting go and the heart. "If you had enough confidence, you could make the world believe almost anything at all." When Billy caught Frank he made a deal with him: Billy helps Frank become a demonstrating dancer at the Grand Ballroom and Frank teaches Billy to dance just to give him confidence.
Chapter 9
The mid summer's night ball was a long time coming and Helene danced with every guest in the ballroom. She certainly knows how to put on a show. But she was more timid than she's ever been before. One afternoon Helene retreated to a corner and took out the letter from her Aunt Lucy. All the girls around thought that it was a letter from some lover. That night she's to meet her mother and aunt at the hotel. They're to dine at the Candlelight Club. Raymond's thoughts were full of his upcoming wedding to Nancy. When Helene arrived at the Candlelight Club her mother and aunt were already there. she asked Roman, the head waiter, to reserve a table in one of the cubbyholes so that their conversation wouldn't be heard. Helene hasn't heard her Aunt Lucy's voice in years. And hearing she realized how much she forgotten it. Once they sat down Helene explained about Raymond remaining at the Buckingham rather than become a Hollywood star and doing all in the name of true love. And Marie said "Love will make a man do the most foolish things. You'd have thought a man like this Mr. de Guise might have found a chambermaid a bit beneath him, don't you think?" Why would she think that Nancy is beneath him? Helene doesn't agree with Marie. love crosses boundaries of any kind and crosses worlds. I mean Helene went at lengths to be with Sidney. And she sacrificed everything along the way. Helene took out photos of her daughter and showed them to her mother. Helene explained how she went through pregnancy alone and in secret as well as finding motherhood hard. They explained to Helene that her father is dying of pneumonia and that some days he can get out of bed and other days they have to bring him soup. Helene had by that time gave up wanting years ago. Helene's mother and Aunt only came to put all that has happened behind them. After a heated argument with her mother, Helene got up and returned to the ballroom.
Chapter 10
There was something that restored Nancy's sense of equilibrium and her purpose in life. She felt her heart soar. It wasn't the excitement of her wedding. There are scales in the world: that one persons day of joy was everyone else's black night of despair. Artie Cohen stood at the top of the stairs wearing new clothes, clean-shaven and hair shortened. He scrubbed up smart. And he's happy that Nancy's getting married. Sometimes when Nancy awoke she thought to herself "This time next year I'll be Mrs. de Guise." Archie is worried that Raymond would pick Georges de la Motte as best man over him. As soon as they went through the chapel doors revealing the hay-moon hall at the head of the Daughters Of Salvation. All around the edge of the hall, the volunteers and attendants of the charity were gathered. As soon as they saw Nancy a great cheer rose up, echoing in the rafters high above. Out of the heart of the volunteers and paid attendance Vivienne Edgerton strode over to Nancy with a bouquet of pink peonies and a cord. This gift wasn't just from the staff but from various patients and other derelicts. This made her heart soar even higher. Vivienne had a piece of paper and began to read:
"The Daughters of Salvation, our beloved home and cause to which of us here are devoting our lives predates the appearance of myself and our dear Miss Nettleton, standing here at my side." "Our beloved Mary Burdett is the one who gave birth to our proud organization, and deserves all the thanks in the world for originating something special, so splendid, here in White Chapel's heart. But I want to talk little tonight about my own introductions to The Daughters Of Salvation and how this would never have happened without the woman standing at my side, Miss Nancy Nettleton, soon to become Mrs Nancy de Guise." Then she talked about how her life was spiraling out of control until she met Nancy and thanked her for all the help she got from Nancy. After all of the celebrations it was another long busy night. Vivienne is currently looking for a new place for the Daughters of Salvation because it needs to move on and life goes on, doesn't it? Nancy intends not to go anywhere. But we all know things will change. Nancy shouldn't stop being who she is. Raymond loves Nancy for who she is. She'll have a different life with different needs. It's a fact of life. I mean she will one day have children with Raymond. I can tell that Raymond and Nancy will be great parents. But not yet was what Nancy thought. Mary asked Nancy if she's ready to be married. She said that she is ready because she loves Raymond and Raymond loves Nancy. Not because Raymond wants to lock Nancy up and throw away the key or become a father by next summer and twice over by summer after that; wanting Nancy to stop coming to The Daughters of Salvation or working at the Buckingham or doing things that make her, her. But Mary's question replayed itself in her mind. Perhaps Nancy isn't ready for marriage at all.
Chapter 11
Helene Marchmont in the Hotel Directors office? What does Maynard Charles want? Billy Brogan already knows Helene's secret, for two years already. and he never said a word about it. Louis Kildare did take Helene to one side and told her that the musicians knew; and heard it from other dancers who heard it from the pages, who heard it from the porters and lift attendants, cocktail waiters and head concierge that same night she met her mother and aunt up at the Candlelight Club. By the looks of things word got out to Maynard Charles. Mr. Charles even told the hotel board. Helene explained things from her perspective. Mr. Charles thought that Helene should of come to him for help, he would of found a way. I mean Mr. Charles has spent days controlling scandals. He really doesn't want to do what the board wants him to do. Rather than firing Helene he suspended her for two weeks.
Chapter 12
Fresh color of summer came to Berkeley square. The sun shone like molten gold. When Mrs. Moffatt emerge from the underground train and met up with the ticket man she thought to herself; "You're half as young as he'll be. You're a babe in arms. The years of my life have beenf flickered by, all bound up in the Buckingham Hotel, and I've been letting them go, one by one..." She's making her wayto Mildenhall. But it involves changing in Cambridge. it took her three hours to get there. By the looks of it she's gone to see her son Malcolm. Whilst at a quiet cafe she took out a sheaf of letters and read them. One started off with "Dear Emmeline" and the other "Dear Mrs. Moffatt" and the letters read:
"I have not heard from you, but perhaps it does no harm for me to continue to write, all the same. I have always liked writing letter. I believe I wrote my first to you when I was old, and kept it under my pillow I knew not where to send it, not even your name." The letters ended with "Your son, Malcolm" or "Yours, in hope, Malcolm Brody." Each of them written with painstaking care as if the writer was a poet of great renown. He also wrote "Please write back, if only to tell me you would like me to desist. I am a grown man now, nearly thirty-three years of age, and I am happy. How few of us can say that, in the day and age? I have health and I have heart. I have had two parents who loved me. The hole in my life is you and, should you not wish to fill it, you can rest assured that I shall carry on with my head held high, and make the mother and father who raised me proud, and serve my King and country. But write to me and tell m, so that I might carry on. The years of our life are so fleeting, and I am in England, I fear, in preparation for a war to come. I should not like to waste any mere of this passing time." It has been twenty-one years since she became a widow when her husband was killed in action. Her heart wasn't ready for it and returned to London after three men helped her clean up a spilled tea and ordered another pot of tea. Once she arrived back at the hotel she went see Maynard Charles in his office. Mr. Charles noticed that Mrs. Moffatt looked liked she have seen a ghost. Mr. Charles explained to Mrs. Moffatt that Lord Adlington is dining with The Hamburg Schechts and that he's staying at the Imperial instead of the Buckingham. Mrs. Moffatt suposed that she knew that those Nazi sycophants are creeping closer to King George and that there are games at play st the Buckingham Hotel too, to which she had no part of. And she liked it that way. The politicians and Kings games and counter games were not for her at all. Right now she needed someone to listen to her. She hardly know where to begin. But Mr. Charles has other things to do. Mrs. Moffatt tried to follow Mr. Charles but he had already went through the Queen Mary doors. But she saw Tobias Bauer, reading one of his pocket novels through the restaurant doors. The loneliness struck her deep inside. She had been keeping this secret to herself for half of her life. Also she saw Archie Adams at the concierge desk. They said he'd never wed because he's married to his music. She heard Archie say her name as she almost disappeared into the housekeeping hall. Instinct made her look back and saw a look of concern creasing his face. Archie has seen tears glimmer in her eyes. She told him that she's fine but he followed her into the housekeeping lounge. She should talk about Malcolm and everything that's going on with her own life. As Archie said "To keep it in, that's to bed down with the devil. When you let it all out, you let the angels in." Mrs. Moffatt Archie her three letters and he read all three of them. she should of told Archie or anyone in the first place. But she told herself not to tell anyone and keep quiet. And this meant walls were built to protect her. Instead they kept her in. It wasn't like any fortress, it became a prison. She told Archie she named her son 'Michael' at first before his name was changed to Malcolmand told Archie the whole story. Archie said that she has nothing to be ashamed of amd said that she's been a mother to all of the girls in the hotel since her husband Jack, who happens to be Malcolm's stepfather died. All mothers do wonderful things for their children. Archie explained that Louis Kildare kept Helene Marchmomt's secret and told Mrs. Moffatt that she and Helene did whatever they did to provide for their children. "Just because you lost your courage once, doesn't meanyou'll lose it again." After their talk Archie offered Mrs. Moffatt to go to Mildenhall with her the next time. Between them they have loads of courage.
Chapter 13
At 62 Albert Yard, Lambeth Frank Nettleton is helping Billy Brogan with his dancing. But Billy seemed to be thinking too much. When I do my daily morning dance I just let the music and rhythm come to me and I let it go. I'm sure Billy will get the hang of it soon. One minuet Billy was getting the hang of it, the next he and Frank were on the floor. However when Billy's brothers and sisters call Frank 'uncle' it made him feel that he's part of the family. As soon as Frank and Billy arrived at the Buckingham they found Raymond waiting for them at the tradesman entrance. But the only person he was really waiting for was Frank. Raymond spruced himself up by wearing his finest tailored midnight blue suit, dress shirt evening and black hair combed back with pomade and glistening like lacquer. The Winter Hollers have arrived. Sounds like that The Winter Hollers are a dance troupe of sorts. They arrived from Vienna. Raymond wanted Frank to see them. If Frank keeps on dancing, smooth off those rough edges, find a little mere grace and he might join a dancing troupe like The Winter Hollers someday. Frank has already seen the finest dancers in London but he wasn't sure why the idea of a traveling dance troupe brought such wonder to his heart. Also Raymond is about to be his brother-in-law. Both Frank and Raymond did come from unremarkable beginnings. Frank thought to himself "One day, one day soon."
Chapter 14
It turns out that Lord Edgerton insisted that the board meeting was to meet away from the Buckingham all along. Maynard Charles wasn't much for a gentleman's club. This meeting was about the future of the hotel and Mr. Charles was in doubt. The board has already engaged in a fierce debate when Mr. Charles arrived. Lord Edgerton addressed Mr. Charles by asking him about the mess that's been going on in the Buckingham Hotel. He explained that Helene has been put on unpaid leave for five whole weeks, and the rumor rippling around the hotel caused him to take action. He's certainly been rehearsing his speech for days. The board has decided to let Helene Marchmont return to the ballroom. Dickie Fletcher, Frances Lloyd, Uriah Bell and Peter Merriweather raised their hands. Although Peter did give John Hastings a look that said"You may have won this battle. But the war was far from over." The next morning a taxi cab drove Helene Marchmont back to the hotel and was greeted by Raymond de Guise. Raymond is no stranger to secrets as he knew Helene's secret for two years. But when Nancy came into his life being set free from his own past secrets had lifted him. How his East end, of the Cohens secret wasn't comparable to Helene's secret. She was certainly happy to be back at the hotel and doing what she does best and that is ballroom dancing. When they arrived at the hotel their were dancers that Helene had never seen before. After introduction between Helene and the other dancers they smothered her with their welcoming love. When Helene's on the dance floor she felt free. She's completely in her element. When she returned to her suite she found Archie waiting for her. She explained to him about the whole keeping Sybil a secret. Archie told Helene about a cousin of a cousin who leads an orchestra at The Court in Chicago and they're about to lose they're lead dancer Rachel Adams because she chose a different life after falling in love. This has given Helene a lot to think about.
Chapter 15
Mrs Agatha Nuttall has seen brides-to-be come to her Regency Bridal shop and go. there were brides who brought their mothers and grandmothers, prim, proper and ready to spend their father's money and about to embark on the true adventure of married life. And then there were brides who were reluctant and fawned over by their bridesmaids-to-be. They glowed with the love of their future, but shuddered at the thought of being fussed about. Regency Bridal has two suites, small chamber in the shape of a piece of pie, one wall was lined with maroons; another was deep wardrobe that was big enough for three shop girls to search through at the same time. A soft furnishing ran between them with a small pedestal between them for brides-to-be to stand on and pose. Sounds like a nice place to find the right dress. Vivienne was present at Nancy's wedding dress fitting and so was Ruth. When Nancy was about to open her mouth in a cheerful rebuke, Rose emerge with three dresses:
Ostentatious gown, with lace ruffs and a bouffant neckline fit for Queen Elizabeth I
Elegant, understated number of unadorned silk
A dress with tassels and minuet details etched up and down ever seam, fit for some Hollywood star.
Agatha has seen these type of brides who came to her shop before Nancy: the undecided brides. But I do wonder which dress Nancy will choose. Whilst all that's happening Frank and the Winter Holler company member Ansel Albrecht were still teaching Billy to dance. After another tumble Frank thought it was hopeless but Ansel reassured him that it's never hopeless and that music is in everyone because in some people it's a little more hidden than others. Eventually Billy got it. But Ansel knew what might help. Ansel took out a bottle of cherry liqueur out of his satchel and offered Frank and Billy a drink. After about five drinks it helped Billy loosen up and dance without thinking.
Chapter 16
September and only 3 months till the Nancy & Raymond's wedding. The Buckingham spared no expense with the autumn festivities. The Winter Hollers company made their long awaited debut in the ballroom. Helene was aware that eyes were watching her differently. They were studying and judging her. Helene may have been dancing since she was a little girl, rehearsed for a fortnight and she scarcely needed a day to learn the routine Raymond had already planned. The music that enveloped her as she sailed across the floor in Raymond arms. For a time that gave her strength. Helene noticed that two men, gentlemen were staring at her. But when they saw her one of them averted his eyes and the other cupped his hand around his mouth and whispered to his neighbor. She noticed scornful looks on the guests. Her heart hasn't been in the dance in years. The Autumn Serenade was in full swing. Lord Edgerton told Mr. Charles that if Helene Marchmont can't stand the pressure of one night like this one, she's done and has to go. Mr. Charles would have to talk to Raymond. However he felt unsure of how much longer he could keep Helene Marchmont's future in the ballroom secure.
Chapter 17
Emmeline Moffatt is at Kings Cross station with Archie Adams at her side for support. He persuaded her to write. He had his reasons to be with Mrs. Moffatt at her time of need. When they arrived at Mildenhall, Mrs. Moffatt's nerves coursed through her but Archie will with her the whole time. Mrs. Moffatt's letter wrote:
"Dear Malcolm
Perhaps you can imagine how many times I have tried to write this letter, only my hand to give up on me, or my mind to lose the thread of any sentence I began to compose. Please don't take my tardiness in replying as a failure of my heart, but any as a explosion of feelings that have been rocking me these past weeks and months, both good, for you, dear Malcolm and ill for me, your mother abandoned you. There are bound to be ghosts at the back of your cupboard, no matter how long, how long you live. But you, my dear boy, are a ghost I have been living with for all thirty-three of your years. You may not know this, but I was married to a wonderful, which polished during the Great War, and though he was as close to me in my heart and soul as any other human being I ever met, not once did I tell him about you. So when your first letter arrived it punctured me more than three decades of silence. I was undone. But I am writing to you, to ask for a second chance…”
And by the looks of things Malcolm written back almost straight away:
“You write that you are sorry,
But I did not come looking for an apology. That is not how my ma and pa raised me. I am grateful for what I have had. But I do wish to look upon your face, and see from whom I came…”
Mrs. Moffatt and Archie reached the café window and saw an airman with hair the color of sand, eyes that mirrored her own and wearing a navy uniform. Mrs Moffatt felt more nervous when the airman saw them through the window. As soon as he laid eyes on Mrs Moffatt he got to his feet and stumbled to reach the door. Once she heard him say her name Mrs. Moffatt stood still. When he looked up and down at Mrs. Moffatt after she said “Michael” which was unfamiliar to him until it occurred to him why she might of said that and smiled. He has his fathers smile. Mrs. Moffatt wanted to run but Archie arm was around her. So he shepherded her towards Malcolm and through the café doors. Malcolm had a deep and rich voice, like honey. And as Mrs Moffatt imagined Malcolms accent was bright and broad. And he also had a big burly, 6ft 7 inche body too. Both Mrs. Moffatt and Malcolm were feeling nervous. Mrs. Moffatt told Malcolm that he was in her head every single day, been the voice in her ears guiding me over onward. A spark in her day and night, ever since the day they took Malcolm out of Mrs. Moffatts arms, dreamt about him and looking for him so often. Mrs. Moffatt hasn’t seen her parents and siblings in decades since Jack died. She asked her son if he’s been happy and he has been happy for what looks like a long time. But he had emotional days as well. When Malcolm was ten his adoptive parents told him where he came from when they were living outside Perth in Western Australia for eight years of his life. By his age now his adoptive parents are dead and gone. He told Mrs. Moffatt his adoptive mother’s final words to him:
“She’s out there, somewhere, if that’s what you want. If you want to know where you came from deep in here.”
If you’re reading this now and feel that your loved ones are still out there I encouraged you to start searching for them right now! Malcolm said in this novel “Start digging and you might find gold.”
Malcolm has been and currently living the life that both his adoptive parents and Mrs. Moffatt had given to him. the day had gone so quickly that Mrs. Moffatt and Archie arrived back at Kings Cross Station and boarded the taxi back to the hotel. And would you believe that the driver had to go the long way because some of the roads were closed. There’s a protest going on because Mr. Chamberlain went to Munich, shook Hitler’s hand, agreed a sworn peace and said they’d be no war. But we know what happened in the end. On the plus side the taxi driver got them to the Buckingham Hotel safe and sound. It turns out that Mrs. Moffatt’s mysterious visitor was Vivienne Edgerton. And she’s expecting!!! The question is who’s the father? More importantly what will her family think of her now?
Chapter 18
2 months till the wedding and Frank got up before dawn on a cold October morning and left the Brogan house early. Frank is still struggling to figure out what to get for Nancy as a wedding gift. I mean she’s his sister after all and she’s not the sort of girl who wants. Something simple should do. Frank also felt nervous about speaking to Mr. Charles about becoming a possible hotel dancer or concierge. Before Frank had the chance to say that he wants to be a hotel dancer in the demonstrations Mr. Charles asked Frank to take the sealed letter and deliver it to the post room. After dropping off the sealed letter Frank ran two errands for M. Etienne Caron and sent out for fresh flowers by the hotels visiting florist. For a time Frank would be content at rehearsals, as the dancers never minded that at all and got used to him lingering. As soon as Raymond went over to frank when taking a break, Frank explained to him about the situation with asking Mr. Charles to let him do a demonstration as a trial basis. Raymond looked at Frank and an idea or something came to mind: Nancy and Raymond’s wedding reception inside the grand ballroom. After Nancy and Raymond had their first dance as husband and wife, their will be a show performed by the Winter Hollers, Mathilde, Gene, Helene and Frank as well. This’ll give Mr. Charles a chance to see what Frank he really is. Sounds like the idea has given Frank hope. And making up a dance could change Frank’s life forever. Ansel agreed to choreograph Frank dance, when they asked him. By that very afternoon Frank completed his errands. Normally after work he and Rosa would go for a walk in Reagent Street. But not with winter approaching. So they settled for armchairs in the kitchenette and trying to think about what present to give to his sister. But when Rosa explained to him about Nancy not knowing which wedding dress she wants, Frank came up with an idea: he gives his sister a wedding dress as a wedding present. Sounds like a good but peculiar idea to me. He remembered that in his old trunk from he was a little boy there was silk from his mothers old wedding dress. I believe something with meaning and history could be the one Nancy’s looking for. As Frank made his way to meet with Ansel there was a commotion in the reception hall. Not only that he saw an ambulance man in his blue wool uniform and cap, and Dr. Evelyn Moore, the Buckingham Hotel’s visiting physician. Billy was there too. A group gathered on the first landing, Frank got closer and closer as something seemed to be drawing him in. all the joy he felt was fading from Frank. When he asked Billy what has happened Billy couldn’t answer. Someone had a fall and died on impact. Frank saw the body of Ansel Albrecht. One moment Frank asked him to choreograph his dance and the next he’s dead. Question is how, when and who was the cause of Ansel’s death?
Chapter 19
What type of luxury is for Raymond de Guise? Being away from the ballroom on a Friday night and spending time with Nancy. That Friday night Raymond and Nancy went to Raymond’s parents house for dinner. Dinner in the Queen Mary restaurant doesn’t compare to dinner in the Cohen household. Nancy has been preparing for one topic of conversation: her dress, bridesmaids etc. Raymond announced that Georges de la Motte won’t be his best man and has asked his younger brother Artie to be his best man. He agreed to be his big brothers best man. I think best man wise should be the grooms brother as they’ve been friends all of their lives. I mean if I was getting married I would ask my big sister Charlotte to be my maid of honor because we’ve been sisters for 30yrs of my life meaning that she became my first best friend. I’m so happy that Artie is going to be Raymond’s best man, it’s what their father Stanley would of wanted. After dinner and cake Artie took Raymond into the little yard while Alma took Nancy to her bedroom and took out a little black box out of a trunk that sat at the bottom of the bed. Inside the black box was a single silver band that had sentimental reasons. It was Raymond’s grandmother’s wedding ring and Alma gave it to Nancy since Alma never had a daughter of her own. Nancy will treasure it.
Chapter 20
Man you wouldn’t believe the events with Ansel Albrecht’s death caused at the Buckingham Hotel. Charles Maynard really needs a good stiff drink. There have been deaths within the walls of the hotel before this one. When Mr. Charles went to his office he found Mr. Moorcock waiting for him and holding a glass of brandy. Just as Mr. Charles was dealing with bad news Mr. Moorcock had even more bad news. Whatever it is it’ll involve Billy Brogan.
Chapter 21
Poor Vivienne, there’s no way of denying it now. With the baby growing inside her, her body is changing. During the first months she was able to hide her growing bump, but now her growing bump is growing rounder by the day. At least she doesn’t get morning sickness anymore. That must have been the toughest thing to conceal. She wanted to tell Nancy but troubling her wouldn’t be the best thing to do. If things were different she would have been one of Nancy’s bridesmaids. My guess is that Vivienne’s friend Warren Peel is the father. But whoever the father is she’ll have to tell him and everyone sooner or later. I hope working out on what she intends to do with Mrs. Moffatt would help. When Vivienne arrived at the housekeeping lounge and inside the room was Helene Marchmont. Looks like Mrs. Moffatt has told Helene about Vivienne and thought she might be a bit of help too. Vivienne explained that she’s yet to tell Mary Burdett, her father etc. Thankfully Vivienne plans to keep the baby. But keeping the baby may cause problems such as either leaving or keep staying in the Buckingham Hotel. You see Helene’s story is different compared to Vivienne’s because she married Sidney without anyone knowing except his parents. They would of raised their daughter together if Sidney didn’t die. But when he did Helene had to make lies. Mrs. Moffatt reassured both girls that they’re not alone and told everything about her grand romance, discovering that she was pregnant, revealing to her mother about her pregnancy, sisters at St. Maud’s, naming her baby Michael, the emptiness about her son being taken away and the weeks and months that followed and how she set eyes on her newly named son Malcolm thirty-three years later.
Chapter 22
It has now been two days since Ansel’s unexpected and untimely tragic death, but the dance must go on. And the show must go on. Billy didn’t realize how much he misses Ansel, and absurd as it sounds to Billy he wanted to jive with him. Rosa has been so kind to Billy. After all the Hotel guest left the ballroom Mr. Schank spoke a heart warming eulogy in front of the Winter Hollers troupe, Nancy, Raymond and Frank. After Nancy took Frank down to the kitchenette for a cup of tea Rose suggested that they should take him dancing. That might help Frank take his mind off Ansel’s death. Ansel’s death doesn’t make sense to Ruth, why did he use to guest stairs? And what was he doing when he took a tumble? Before Ansel died he wrote his final letter to his family. The last letter they’ll ever receive from Ansel. They should find out what Ansel was doing up the guest stairs. Billy Brogan and not too long after Frank arrived and he told Billy why Ansel was at the guest stairs, when he had no reason to be there at all which made him think that day when Ansel couldn’t dance with Frank until that evening because he was writing a letter to his father. Ansel wanted to tell his father something important and Frank thought it would be down in the post room. They went through seven sacks until they found a letter with a Vienna address. But the letter that Billy found turned out to be the wrong letter as it’s an American address. But thank goodness that Frank found the letter: Josef-Hasse Gasse 12, Kaaiserebersdof, Vienna with the name Herr David Albrecht. Billy and Frank discovered that Tobias Bauer’s name is written in the letter. This could mean that something else might of happened the night Ansel died.
Chapter 23
Could you believe that after all that spill in the post room that letter that Billy Brogan opened lay perched on the edge of Mrs Farrier’s desk? That’s a bit careless of Frank and Billy. It’ll fall onto the cleaner’s trolley. But when it fell out of the trolley and onto the floor of the service lift, a porter named Daniel Broome picked it up. When he realised that it was Vivienne Edgerton’s writing the compulsion to read was too much to bear. Her secret is so big. But we know as soon as Daniel read Vivienne’s letter her secret will go out before All Hallows Eve. But when it reached Mr. Charles he asked Vivienne to come to his office. But when she arrived not only Mr. Charles was in his office but her mother and Lord Edgerton where there too. It sounds like the news of their daughter’s pregnancy has reached them. And by the sounds of it they’re not happy. When Maynard offered Vivienne a seat she refused. She really doesn’t need to be treated like a child. She’s twenty-one years of age, can address her stepfather by his first name Bartholomew and they have neither business nor law over Vivienne herself. When Vivienne’s mother told Vivienne that they’re so proud of their daughter that year, no dramas and love affairs Vivienne used to have etc. Vivienne isn’t their undoing and isn’t going to ruin her parent’s lives. It’s her life and she’ll do what she wants. When Lord Edgerton called his stepdaughter a spoilt little rich girl, Vivienne told him that she hasn’t been spending a single penny he gave her two Christmases ago and finally told her parents about The Daughters Of Salvation. But Lord Edgerton thinks that he and his family are higher and threatened to stop paying her allowance and revoke her stay at the Buckingham Hotel. But when Vivienne told them that the reason why she stays at the hotel that is so that her mother could live her new life and pretend her mother’s old life never happened. Vivienne will never turn into her own mother. After Vivienne left Maynard and Lord Edgerton had a heated discussion about both Helene Marchmont and Vivienne. After Lord and Lady Edgerton left Billy and Frank arrived with some important information related to Ansel’s death. Billy and Frank had worked really hard translating Ansel’s letter, with a little help from a friend of Billy’s father. The letter wrote:
“Dear Papa,
Where to begin? First of, know that I am well and in good health, and that our English adventures continues to amaze. Now that the Autumn Serenade is over, we look to the Christmas season. I have written to you for the magnificent serenade before, and I still carry it in my heart. Mama would of fallen in love with it, I’m sure. But you papa, even if you had resisted its charms, you would fall in love what Christmas has to offer. There is to be a wedding in the ballroom. And, after that, the Midwinter Ball. But enough of the ups and downs of ballroom life though I know you love it so! Something happened at the serenade that I am yet to understand. Papa, I believe I need help, and I dare not ask Jonas and Mr Schank for I do not want them to think I undermining the beauty and success of this voyage. I want to dance with them forever. I would not want them to think I was causing a fuss. As I danced during the serenade, I looked up and there at the railing overlooking the dance floor, was a face I have never forgotten. Lukas Jager was staring back at me. I would recognise those eyes anywhere, papa. The way they look upon you so kindly, hiding all that is hidden underneath. I have never forgotten, papa, that night when I was eight and he had come to dinner, and the way he fawned over mama, while belittling all you work. To think that a man like that could rise to become a kommisar in the police force, while you remain a staff sergeant. To bully and belittle his way to the top…I have not thought of Jager in so long. I admit, I was afraid of him when I was small, and even more afraid in this last year, with all that happened in our dear Vienna. Indeed, I fear writing too much, in case those letters are read by people with no business to read them, and I cause for you, mama and Lisette. But I am afraid; papa and I don’t know what to do. For I have done some investigating of my own, just idle questions here in the Buckingham Hotel, and here Jager does not go by the name Jager at all. Here his name is Mr Tobias Bauer, and he lives in the hotel’s Park Suite as a refugee from the after effects of the Anschluss. The Anschluss! That occupation of our dear Vienna that you and your brothers in arms did so much to resist. That destruction of our home from which, no matter how much our friends and their families resisted, Lukas Jager was always at east with, in a way that I remember made mama’s skin crawl. I don’t know the meaning of any of this. But Lukas Jager, who vanished from Vienna, is alive and well and living at the Buckingham Hotel. And I cannot help, papa, but remember how he tried to convince you and your fellows to step aside, to let the German tank roll into Vienna, to stop the pointless resistance of the Vienna police. Send me word, as soon as you can. Until then, I am praying that his path and mine do not cross again.
Your son,
Ansel”
At the time Billy and Frank had the letter and brought it to Mr. Charles no other soul has seen it and they think it’s accurate, and Mr. Charles tried to make sense of it. If this letter were true, it would change everything. Or Ansel might have made a mistake. But when Mr. Charles took out Tobias’s passport out of the hidden behind the portrait of the Buckingham original board that hung on the wall of his office. When they looked at Tobias Bauer and name and Frank is certain that Ansel wasn’t mistaken. Meaning Tobias Bauer is a possible spy. Maynard suddenly remembered that night Ansel separated from his partner. What could have happened was Ansel might have gone to confront Tobias. Lukas Jager wouldn’t want his secret to go out. Question is why is he here? And Ansel didn’t make a mistake about Tobias Bauer. Mr. Charles gave Billy a note that is to leave with the evening pick-up and Billy has to be there when it happens. In the meantime they have to keep out of trouble and out of Tobias Bauer’s path. That night Vivienne arrived at a mansion on St. Lukes Fields and thought of a warm bed, food, cocoa and a hot bath. The man named Warren invited her in and she told him that she’s pregnant. Maybe he’s the father.
Chapter 24
It’s November and only one month till the wedding. Now usually around this time of planning the wedding is getting through with the last minuet details and preparing yourself for the wedding. Helene arrived at the Marchmont family manor with Sybil. Helene’s memories of when she was a little girl came flooding back. But she also felt a stabbing sadness. But before the day Noelle convinced Helene to go and see her father because once he’s gone there’d be going backwards. Or if Helene set sail for Chicago there’s no coming home, not while he’s still alive. And it’s Helene’s path to take with her heart to follow. But one more chance shouldn’t diminish her. Give them one more chance. They weren’t expecting Helene of course. Lucy opened the door and Helene was thankful for that, as she wasn’t certain that Lucy would be there at all. Helene stepped into the warm manor with her daughter in hand. When Helene reassured Sybil that they’re with family, Sybil didn’t feel that way. Lady Marchmont was bewilded to see Helene and her granddaughter Sybil. Even though they weren’t expecting them. Helene imagined what the manor looked like at Christmas with all the baubles and lights. When Helene thought that her mother was going to say that she feels let down. But instead her mother apologised to her daughter and blames herself for her daughters bind. When they reached Helene’s parents bedroom door, she followed her mother inside. I bet her father won’t be pleased to see his own daughter. But I was surprised that it turned out that he was glad to see his daughter. They reminisced the times when Helene was dancing as a little girl and it was as if time stood still before Sidney & Sybil. Just in case Helene’s father doesn’t live pass Christmas he gave Helene her Christmas present. It was a photo album filled with old portraits from when Helene was a little girl. At the back there were cuttings of reviews and writer ups she received, covers of vogue and Haper’s Bazaar. When Helene left the room and returned with Sybil her father was surprised and horrified. All he did was stare. Helene told her father that she wanted to see him again, tell him that she loves him and hearing that he loves her too and meaning it. When her father begged Helene to leave Sybil with Sidney’s family and return home, Helene told her father that she could never give up her daughter for anything.
Chapter 25
Every night Billy finished his shift he would sweep the floor of his quarters, polish his desk, dusted the bookshelf, straighten his uniform shirts and made certain that the contours of his cap weren’t creasing out of shape. Two weeks since Ansel died and time had flown by. He kept on going through sacks of posts, looking for a letter bounded for Vienna. It’s not the first that Billy was given instructions to gather information for Mr. Charles, he would eavesdrop on dinners at The Queen Mary. Billy found another letter bound for Vienna. Billy set about his work. On one side a letter to Vienna and at its bottom was the signature of a man who called himself Tobias Bauer. On the other side a blank page, onto which he diligently every word and stroke of a pen. After he completed his task Billy hastily made his way to Mr. Charles’s office and handed him what he copied. At the candlelight club Mr. Charles showed Mr. Moorcock the papers. Maynard believed that Tobias came as a refugee at the start of this novel. At the time Ansel died with the knowledge of who Tobias Bauer really was. And Tobias killed Ansel. What could of happened is that Ansel might have been lured to Tobias’s suite willingly and ended up being pushed down the stairs. His scheme is putting Mr. Moorcock, Mr. Charles and everyone at the Buckingham Hotel in danger.
Chapter 26
Two hours have passed since they've left London on a sleeper train. Raymond was trying to get some sleep. His brother Artie wasn't getting any sleep. He had his legs dangling over the edge of the bunk with a flask in his hands containing hot rum. Artie has taken Raymond on a train ride to Blackpool. They arrived at dawn and the north pier was quiet. Raymond had been to the Winter Gardens a few time before with Georges. He remembered the very first moment he set foot in the Empress Ballroom. I think this trip to Blackpool is a stag weekend. I mean the wedding is only a few short weeks away, so by now it's time to celebrate their last days of freedom before married life. By midday both Raymond and Artie had a hangover. Later at the taproom Raymond told Artie that he had found a place for he and Nancy to live on a corner of Maida Vale, overlooking the canal. Sounds like a nice place to raise their children. After their last drinks at the taproom they made their way to the Winter Gardens. Even though the feeling was the same, the Empress Ballroom had changed. The warmth hit Artie and drew him forward like a moth, but the scent brought Raymond back to his senses. Heat of bodies of the ballroom dance floor and rosewood and varnish. Raymond took in the splendour but Artie scoured the ballroom for a different reason. Artie spotted a group of ladies and introduced two of them to Raymond: Hilary and Rita. They danced with both women and another pair of sisters who were also out for a good night. Artie danced with an older lady and Raymond with two old ladies who were nervous to take to the floor at all. Well at least they're making some women who are old enough to be their mothers, aunties and grandmothers enjoy themselves. As Raymond danced memories kept hopping into his head. As they left the Winter Gardens after one of the stewards told them to leave, Raymond told Artie about the Buckingham, John Hastings, the upcoming war, Ansel's death, Helene's new opportunity in Chicago, new generation in the ballroom which would make Raymond be the oldest in years and Vivienne being pregnant. Raymond also told Archie that Nancy told him that Vivienne has found anew family. When Artie told his brother in a fit of anger that the only reason why Vivienne is staying with the Peels was because she needs a roof over her head, Warren's not right for her and having Warren's baby because he's the father of Vivienne's baby? That a big shock on a Eastenders scale.
Chapter 27
It's finally December and only nine days till the wedding!!! When Nancy looked at the date on her calendar she felt the thrill of wonder. Nine days to go and Nancy still has no dress. The Buckingham hotel was getting all decked up for Christmas. Frank has something to his sister, his wedding present to his sister was their mother's wedding dress. Frank's old toy box was lined with the silk from their mothers wedding dress and asked Mrs. Moffatt for some help and sent him to the hotel seamstresses. Frank showed them his mother's wedding photo and the seamstresses tried their best as their wasn't enough to make the dress as it should be. Decorations materialised on every door of every suite, hall, each restaurant including the Queen Mary restaurant. And the menu had their traditional Yuletide fare of pheasant and venison, roast chestnut and sage, sprigs of plump red berries adorned every table. Worries of one member of the Buckingham hotel were blinded by the beauty of the coming Christmas. Billy Brogan was asked to sneak and spy on some of the people such as Reichsgraf von Amsberg and Reichsritter Wittekind as they may send letters. I hope this'll be the last time they'll see the back of Tobias Bauer. That night billy kept his eyes on the two German nobles dining with a third gentleman as well as Tobias Bauer, sitting in a secluded corner of the restaurant, pretending to peruse the evening newspaper. Billy had got his invitation to the wedding. He's excited about his invitation that he propped it up on his desk by the window. He gave up on the idea of dancing at the reception as supposed that his dancing dream died with Ansel and Frank didn't want to rehearse much after that either. Why don't Billy put in a little on his own? That might ease things. I can tell that whilst planning the wedding Raymond and Nancy much of been rehearsing their wedding dance. Nancy took Raymond to show him the dress. Isn't it bad luck for the groom to see the dress before the wedding? What was she thinking? But she does have everything she needs now: Raymond, Frank and her parents. Raymond explained about his trip to Lancashire as it yielded more secrets more than one because he told her the reason why Vivienne never confide in Nancy about her pregnancy as she and Artie are in love and Artie's the father. That cold winter night Billy made his way to the Merchant Colonial Club and handed the doorman a single yellow envelope. Instead of returning to the Buckingham hotel Billy decided to go home. more hours have passed and Billy returned to the Merchant Colonial Club, received an envelope and returned to the Buckingham hotel. Down in the post room Billy slipped the letter into the sack. But Billy wasn't alone as he thought as he reached the basement stairs and returned to the concierge desk. A second set of eyes were watching him from the bottom of the guest stairs. Those eyes belonged to Tobias Bauer, waiting, watching and biding his time.
Chapter 28
It's the eve of Nancy and Raymond's wedding and wedding jitters must be kicking in. I'm sure being at the Daughters of Salvation would help take her mind off the wedding. When Nancy went to see Vivienne she asked her if she loves Artie. and Vivienne really loves Artie. When Vivienne thought that she's into the men staying at the Buckingham hotel and it was killing her, the expectations and isolation. The night she left the hotel she told Artie about the pregnancy when he thought she was done with him. At the time Vivienne and Artie thought the whole world made sense. Not long after Vivienne's mother wrote to her saying she'd help Vivienne as she knew people who could find a home for Vivienne's baby. But she decided it's her ofe and and she'll keep the baby. But Nancy reassured Vivienne that she can still go to the wedding. But Vivienne didn't want the attention to fall on her instead of Nancy & Raymond. But Nancy said Vivienne will come to the wedding, not as a bridesmaid but as a friend.
The wedding day has arrived and ever chambermaid other than Nancy were excited. But Mrs. Moffatt will keep all of the chambermaid in order. Vivienne arrived wearing a loose fitted tan house dress. Three miles away Raymond is at his family house. Obviously he can't see the bride before the wedding as it's bad luck. Raymond was nervous. Raymond chose to wear a tailored slate-grey morning suit. Artie hasn't their mother about Vivienne's pregnancy as he doesn't want to spoil his brothers day. A Rolls Royce limousine arrived to take Raymond and Artie to the town hall. And Artie's driving them. They're certainly arriving in style. Raymond had never felt this nervous, not since he first stepped onto the ballroom floor. I just hope they make it to the town hall on time. Hopefully before Nancy because he has to be there before her or else he'll see her. Christ Church up on Spital Fields pealing in chorus whilst St. George in the East rang 11am. Which means in one hour Nancy will be walking down the aisle. He better get there and fast. Back at the Buckingham hotel Frank is nervous about his wedding speech and the dancing too. And I can say the same for Billy. Final touches are in place for Nancy and she was surprised to hear that a horse and carriage had arrived to take Nancy to her wedding. Meanwhile the Rolls Royce limousine has stuttered to a halt. Why didn't they get a taxi that Raymond wanted in the first place? They better come up with something or else Nancy will be there before them. Eventually the car started up and the were one their way.
They finally arrived at Marylebone Town Hall for the wedding. Raymond saw the guests milling about inside he building that gave Raymond some hope. There is a strong chance that he arrived before Nancy. The hour of the wedding has finally tolled its tone and Raymond saw Billy Brogan, Gene Sheldon, Maynard Charles, Mathilde Bourchier, Mrs Moffatt, Archie Adams, Helene Marchmont and Georges de la Motes. To Raymond's relief Georges told Raymond that the groom arrives first. As soon as everyone heard the sound of horse hooves approaching it gave everyone the signal to make their way into a hall panelled in oak. Artie pattered his pockets to fell for the rings. As they made their way to the front Raymond saw Vivienne Edgerton sitting alone at the end of one row with her hands folded barley enough to conceal her pregnancy bump. Some of the guests stared at her and some of them whispered about her. But Vivienne sat with her head held high. Soon the guests hushed when the sound of the clicking heels were approaching. Rosa and Ruth were in wearing eggshell-blue dresses when they appeared. Nancy and Frank stood in the door frame with their arms intertwined. Nancy was moments away from becoming a wife and Raymond was moments away from becoming a husband. They had never been happier in their lives. At the Buckingham Archie Adams announced Nancy and Raymond as Mr. & Mrs. Raymond de Guise. They danced to a slow number at first. An old-time waltz I believe. Raymond's family were cheering loudly. As their danced reach its climax the doors at the back of the dance floor opened and out came Helene Marchmont in the arms of Georges de la Motte, Jonas Holler whirling with Karina Kainz; all of the dancers of both companies, launching into a wild and ecstatic jives with Frank Nettleton soaring into view with Mathilde Bourchier which thrilled Rosa. Georges gazed on Frank with a blessing look. Even Maynard Charles seemed to approve. Not ling after the show stopping, Strictly Come Dancing style group dance everyone had their chance to dance on the ballroom floor in the the Grand. Ruth looked at Raymond and Nancy, Frank and Rosa and wanted what they had. But when Billy asked Ruth to dance, she accepted.
After all that dancing they must of built up an appetite as they had as they had dinner in the Queen Mary restaurant. And it sounded like a delectable dinner. When Archie made his toast about his brother Raymond from childhood to dancer, archie turned and thanked Nancy not just for joining the family but for saving Raymond from himself and showed that there is goodness everywhere if anyone cared to find it. When it was Frank's turn he spoke about how his sister took care of him and how she helped him cope with their fathers death. During the speeches Helene received a telegram. When Helene reached the reception hall Tobias Bauer was waiting in line. The telegram read that Helene's father has died. She looked at Tobias Bauer when he asked her if she's alright. But before the telegram Helene decided to go to Chicago.
Chapter 29
It's Christmas day and Mrs Moffatt is about to receive the very best gift she could ever get. However the work doesn't take time off as there's still a hotel to run and clean. But a good number of chambermaids have been permitted to take the day off to visit family and friends. I wonder where Raymond and Nancy will be celebrating their first Christmas as a married couple. Probably at Raynond's family home. Malcolm had written a letter to Mrs Moffatt:
"Dear Emmeline,
I am back from our training in the Highlands of Scotland, and received your invitation. please don't think ill of me for a tardy reply! I'd be delighted to accept. I still know so little of London, and all that you have said about your hotel fills me with thoughts of how I imagined England would be when I was boy: the palaces, the spires, the guards on parade! I will be there, with all the pleasure in the world.
Your son,
Malcolm."
Mrs. Moffatt waited for her son to arrive. When she gave up waiting she told Archie that Malcolm didn't show up. But Archie led her to the reception hall and there he was, Malcolm Brody. This has got to be the best Christmas for both mother and son. At the Cohen house Vivienne and Artie are three months away from becoming parents. But before they had dinner they waited for another guest to arrive. Whilst they're waiting Raymond and Nancy announced that they'll be honeymooning in Lancashire before moving into Number 18 Blomfield Road, Maida Vale. Nancy decided not to leave both the Buckingham hotel and the Daughters of Salvation. Both Nancy and Raymond were surprised to hear that Vivienne and Artie are to be married. The mystery guest was at the bottom of the staircase, a nine or ten year old girl who is as tall as Alma's shoulder with little black eyes, dark hair, dark complexion and plump cheeks called Leah Elkamm. She's a child refugee with no place to call home. Back at the hotel a Christmas party was being held down in the kitchenette and chambermaid lounge. That can only mean Billy will be dancing. later Billy and Ruth went for a walk and stopped to listen Christmas carollers singing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman." There is something about Christmas that dispels reflections of the year that has gone by. Ruth apologise to billy for being hard on him.. She doesn't have to, nobody doesn't have to like people they don't like. You don't choose who to fall in love with because love choose us. When Ruth told Billy about what she's been feeling and thoughts about Martha all night ling after meeting her at the Starligh Lounge. my guess is Ruth fancies girls rather than boys and that's why she doesn't give any man a chance. Billy is a good friend as he held onto every word Ruth said to him. As they were about to slip pass the reception hall just as they were making their way back to the housekeeping lounge, he heard a voice calling his name from behind the Christmas tree and Tobias Bauer had just emerged from the Queen Mary Restaurant. He asked him to post a letter to his family. Why do I have a feeling that Tobias is luring Billy up to the park suite? This letter might contain secret pieces of information. when Tobias handed Billy the letter he looked at the envelope and it has his name on it. The cane Tobias held in his hand was either a prop or a weapon. When Tobias told him to open it the letter read : "I can see you, Mr. Brogan." It sounded like Tobias Bauer knows that Billy is working for Maynard Charles. The only thing that Lukas Jager and his people cared about was power. Billy fought to stay alive. When the guest life bell rang he heard Ruth calling his name. Billy escaped into the lift and explained to Ruth about Tobias Bauer's true identity and who is he. They must get to mr. Charles's office. If only Maynard Charles knew about the Chicago job that Archie and Helene have taken. Helene is to leave the Buckingham hotel in the New Year. Suddenly Billy and Ruth burst into the office and told Maynard Charles that Tobias Bauer knows everything and tried to kill Billy. Archie was shocked to hear and see what's unravelling before him. Billy and Maynard Charles made their way to the reception hall, Billy told Maynard Charles that Ruth is the only person who knows whats been going on. But as they reached the chequered hall they weren't alone as Lukas Jager showed up. There was a bit of a stand between Maynard Charles, Billy Brogan and Lukas Jager. Lukas Jager left the hotel but Maynard Charles reassured Billy that there will be justice for men like Lukas Jager and the world will catch up on men like him. They'll need to send word out to Mr. Moorcock.
Chapter 30
It is now Boxing Day and traditionally Maynard Charles would of retired to his own suite and leave all of the day-to-day runnings of the hotel to his managers. By twelfth night a team of workmen would be rigging up a scaffold, take down the decorations and chop up the tree for the hotel boilers. Billy's duties in the post-room are officially over and he's back behind the concierge desk. In the heart of the Queen Mary restaurant sat six representatives of the hotel board: Lord Edgerton, John Hastings, Urich Bell, merriweather, Fletcher and Lloyd. Maynard Charles knew why they were there and why he's there. Jager's flight from the hotel kept on playing in his head over and over again all Christmas night long. Maynard Charles did put Billy Brogan in various amount of tortures. Even these words that Lukas Jager said played in his head "Your board will hear of this outrage Mr. Charles. A flagrant abuse of my privacy. Lies and blackmail to boot!" The board has found out about what's been going on in the hotel. Maynard Charles tried to tell the board that Billy did not know what he was doing and only acted on instructions alone. Maynard Charles denied everything including blackmail. He did try to explain that Tobias Bauer was one of his majestic enemies, a saboteur and not an aged exiled man. Maynard Charles took up the opportunity to play at Lukas Jager's own game. The entire board has had enough of Maynard Charles imagination. But twenty years since he became the manager of the Buckingham hotel sine he came back from the Great War. Maynard Charles have tidied away scandals that could possibly disrupt the smooth running of the hotel. Why can't the board realise that? I mean their are secret hidden within the walls of the hotel that the board will never ever know. Maynard Charles told the entire board that he'll no longer remain as the manager and handed in his formal resignation notice. Little did they know that Frank Nettleton and Billy Brogan were crouching together at the doors of the Queen Mary. They must of heard everything that has been going on in the restaurant. Prior to the meeting Mr. Charles wrote three letters and handed the correct formal notice of resignation to the board. For the original two he burned them and wrote new ones. Emmeline Moffatt arrived at Mr. Charles's office and he told her that he handed in his resignation. And then Frank Nettleton, Billy Brogan, Raymond and Nancy de Guise, Louis Kildare, Archie Adams and chambermaids rose and Ruth arrived at Mr. Charles's office and Maynard Charles explained to them that he had no choice but to leave. Maynard Charles gave Frank Nettleton a chance to audition as a hotel dancer. He handed another note to Nancy, assuring her that her job is not at risk. After his speech Maynard Charles left the hotel for the last time.
On the third day after Christmas Helene received a letter from Maynard Charles. It read:
"Dear Miss Marchmont
I am writing so that I can myself break the news that as of this day, 26th December 1938, I am no longer to be director of the Buckingham hotel. Formalities aside, I want you to know that I wish you all the best in your new life in Chicago. It was with great sadness that I watched events unfold for you this year; had it been my power to preserve your position in the Grand for longer, I would gladly have done so. You have my utmost respect for the experience you have lived through, and the person who has shone vividly throughout it all. I have known secrets in my life, but few carried, like yours with such grace and dignity. Would that there were more like you in the world , Miss Marchmont. With hope that one day, the stories of our lives may intersect again.
Yours, with affection,
Maynard Charles.
P. S. Please find enclosed correspondence that arrived in the hotel post room before Christmas."
The other letter that came with Maynard's letter was from her aunt Lucy and it read:
"Dearest Helene,
It is Tuesday evening, 20th December, and I am writing to you, having been up to London to visit the offices of Messrs Lawton & Lawton, your father's solicitors since he was a young man. We laid your father to rest two days ago, and it was a bleak midwinter day that saw him committed to the ground at Rye. That you were not there brings shame on us, Helene, though not on you. Your mother and I carry this shame alone. I had hoped to be writing you with better tidings. I had thought though you may think me a fool that we would arrive at Lawton & Lawton to discover that my brother never truly wrote you out of his last will and testament. But on reading of this, it was revealed that your father left but two benefactors in his will: half of the estate to your mother, and half to me, that it might exist in the Marchmont line a little longer. My brother died a stubborn man with a broken heart, breaking further hearts with his last breath.
I am sorry Helene.
Helene my brothers' death will echo in me for some years but the sins of his life with echo in me further, unless I can do something to set them right. I had not expected to inherit much from my brother. Your grandparents left me their jewellery and some family heirlooms, but beyond that I have had little. That he has bequeathed me half the Marchmont estate can only be because this was meant for you. I have today instructed Lawton & Lawton to begin the process of gifting this, in its entirety, to you and your daughter Sybil in the hope, my darling, that you might come home and that (though I expect no forgiveness in return for the gift something which should rightfully be yours), somehow we might be close again; and that, in time, I might walk Sybil in the orchards as I once walked with you, might picnic with her one the sands, might read with her and teach her arithmetic, be the auntie I once was in a better time, to you. I should have fought for you, Helene. I should have abandoned them when they did not see. But I did not, and this regret burns in me. I hope that there is a way we can begin to put this right. I am sending this to the Buckingham hotel, in hope that it finds you this Christmas. But whether I see you or not, Helene, yours to do with as you wish; and my heart will be yours as well.
Yours with love always,
Aunty Lucy."
On New Years Eve, Helene and her daughter Sybil travelled to rye to visit the Marchmont Manor. Lucy wasn't sure if they would come. Helene told her aunt about her plans to leave for Chicago and it was tearing Helene in two. Sometimes life changes overnight. That night at the hotel there was dancing in the Grand. Raymond and Nancy moved into their new house in Maida Vale. They had a really good look around. But lying on the doormat was a letter. It read:
"Dear Raymond, dear Nancy
It would not do to leave you both without the fondest farewell. I remember an age when I scored music and dance as a distraction from the very real business of running the Buckingham hotel. That age is long gone, my friends and good riddance to it. Raymond, you will know the joy in which I have spent my years, and the satisfaction I have gained from a life lived in such fine company. I do not mean the lords and ladies we have together served. I mean the good people who man the Buckingham hotel and, among them, the good souls I am writing now: two of the finest people I have had the privilege to know. Time is marching on. The world will not wait. I am preparing as I must, to look after my friends and colleagues once I am gone. I have today instructed the Queen Mary, French Bistro and Candlelight Club that any excess food meant for the refuse will, from this moment on, instead re-directed to the Daughter of Salvation charitable organisation in Whitechapel. Let Lord Edgerton discover this, and make of it what he will, at his own pace. I will do what I can for Emmeline and Archie, for Billy, and Frank, for all those who I have come to think of as family over the years. Because, make no mistake, that is what the Buckingham has been to me, a family, where I have none of my own. I would leave you with one word of advice before I sign off. It is perhaps; advice you would not expect from the hotel director you have come to know. But Raymond I implore you: keep dancing. Dance together in the privacy of your own home. Dance together, in the ballrooms and clubs. Dance together, when you wake in the morning and each night. Dance when you are weary, and dance when you are not. the world is going to need joy, and it is down to each of us to call that joy into being and keep it alive. I have little doubt that, in two souls as perfectly matched as yours. There will be joy untold.
Yours with love,
Maynard"
1939 will be the making of them.
My thoughts about this book are that there is warmth, juicy secrets being revealed, never giving up on your dreams, making up for what happened in the past and rekindling relationships with family members. As what Bruce Forsyth, Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman say that Maynard Charles said to Nancy and Raymond de Guise in his last letter to them:
"Keep dancing"
